Lower Back Pain Remedies
Lower back pain or lumbago is a widespread protest. It is predicted that back pain is the second most common disorder for which adults seek medical thought. There are many remedies available for back pain as the causes. Before any treatment can be used it is important to obtain a diagnosis of the problem. Sometimes, lower back pain isn't just confined to the back. For example, kidney problems can cause lower back pain. So can appendicitis. In these cases the underlying medical condition must be treated in order for the pain to resolve.
In other cases, back pain may be caused by a variety of factors such as strain, weak muscles, poor posture, heredity, herniated disk, degenerative disc disease and arthritis. There are many ways to deal with back pain. If the pain is due to injury, a period of rest may be in order to let the injury heal. Injuries respond best to cold therapy applied to the affected area for a few days. After a few days, heat can be used to soothe the discomfort. Over the counter pain relievers like ibuprofen and naproxen sodium may also be used to reduce swelling and relieve discomfort. You may also find that soaking in the bathtub or a hot tub may also provide relief.
Some severe cases may require prescription pain relievers and/or muscle relaxants. Often these drugs come with a high risk of dependence so they should be used under the strict supervision of your doctor. In addition, you should not drive or operate machinery when taking prescription medications for pain. Your doctor and pharmacist can tell you more about these types of medications if indeed they are prescribed for your back pain. Many people find they are able to cope with back pain using OTC medicines and exercise.
While you might think that exercise would make the pain worse, it often can help. Exercise is one of the most common lower back pain remedies recommended by doctors. There are certain exercises that are designed to stretch and strengthen the back without harming it further. Get the approval of your doctor before beginning an exercise program. He or she may recommend yoga, Pilates or water exercises. You may also be referred to a physical therapist who can devise a customized program based on your individual needs.
